We asked That’s Not My Age blogger and fashion journalist Alyson Walsh to round up the most wearable SS18 fashion trends around, with some straightforward styling tricks to boot. The result? Ultra-quick and easy updates for your wardrobe. Her handy style guide means there’s no need to worry about what to wear – simply follow these three perennially chic trends and you’ll have the new season (and beyond) sorted.

It’s always good news when a timeless wardrobe favourite gets a new lease of life. And this season there’s really no need for the perennial pencil skirt to look prim and proper when there are so many printed or patterned fabrics to play with. Should you prefer to keep it simple, go for a souped-up classic with navy or charcoal suede or leather. Pairing a figure-hugging skirt with a slouchy blouse, an oversized sweatshirt or a denim jacket is the easiest way to take the edge off. Then just add trainers or kitten heels, depending on whether you want to look business smart or street savvy. Our picks: Lottie print blouse, £99, Whistles; Tammi suede skirt in charcoal, £275, Reiss

Some things never go out of style – and what could be chicer than a loose cotton shirt and white jeans this (make that every) summer? Whether you opt for tomboy-style with an oversized mannish shirt, or go for Parisian Cool with a silky, sensual blouse, be sure to employ a half-tuck (wear your top half in, half out of your jeans) for that effortless, easy-breezy feel. Slip on a matching blazer or light summer coat, add a couple of pieces of silver jewellery and a pair of run-around flats for an outfit that’s guaranteed to look brilliant all summer long. Our picks: Oversized shirt, £69, Cos; Hoxton crop flare jeans, £90, Jigsaw; Karima loafers, £119, Kurt Geiger

A decorative jacket slipped on over jeans, a plain T-shirt and a pair of heels is the perfect way to refresh your wardrobe. Whether it’s a double-breasted jacket in a bold primary colour, a beautiful floral jacquard blazer or an oh-so chic tweed edge-to-edge style, wearing a statement piece together with your wardrobe basics is the best way to nail modern day-to-evening dressing. And the good news is an eye-catching trophy jacket doesn’t require an ostentatious display of wealth. Tip: avoid looking like Liberace by keeping everything else paired back and simple. Our picks: Straight fit blazer, £89, & Other Stories; Boy fit side-split jeans, £80, French Connection  Alyson Walsh is the author of Know Your Style, published by Hardie Grant, £12.99.
