Celebrating Two Milestones, One Pop of Pride at Victoria Leeds
This summer, we’re marking two very special anniversaries with a vibrant celebration of art, culture and community at Victoria Leeds.
As we celebrate 10 years of Victoria Leeds and 20 years of Leeds Pride, we’re bringing something truly unique to the city centre with Two Milestones, One Pop of Pride – a major public art installation from internationally renowned contemporary artist Whatshisname, curated by our partners at Castle Fine Art in Victoria Quarter.
A Pop of Pride Comes to Leeds
Throughout July, visitors to Victoria Leeds can discover a collection of playful and thought-provoking artworks from Whatshisname, the artistic alias of Sebastian Burdon. Known around the world for his distinctive sculptures, prints and public art projects, the artist has built a reputation for creating works that blend humour, nostalgia and social commentary in unexpected ways.
At the heart of the exhibition are two of his iconic POPek Balloon Dog sculptures, displayed in prominent locations across the destination. One sculpture takes pride of place on the stunning mosaic floor in Victoria Quarter, while the second can be found outside John Lewis in Victoria Gate.
Designed to spark conversation and bring a smile to visitors’ faces, the colourful installations provide the perfect backdrop for Pride celebrations and summer city-centre visits.
Bringing Art and Community Together
At Victoria Leeds, we’re passionate about creating experiences that go beyond shopping and dining. As we mark this important chapter in our history, we wanted to celebrate the creativity, inclusivity and vibrant spirit that make Leeds such a special city.
Our Centre Director, Jo Coburn, explains:
“This year presents a unique opportunity to celebrate two important milestones for Leeds. As we mark 10 years of Victoria Leeds and 20 years of Leeds Pride, we wanted to create something memorable that reflects the city’s creativity, inclusivity and vibrant cultural scene. Whatshisname’s work perfectly captures a sense of joy, individuality and self-expression, making it an ideal way to celebrate Pride with our visitors.”
Meet the Artist Behind the POPek Balloon Dogs
For more than 15 years, Sebastian Burdon, better known as Whatshisname, has been making his mark on the contemporary art world. His instantly recognisable POPek Balloon Dogs have travelled across the globe, delighting audiences with their playful personality and bold visual impact.
Speaking about the exhibition, Whatshisname said:
“Bringing the POPek balloon dogs to such a vibrant and culturally rich city as Leeds is an absolute thrill for me. It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since these playful, cheeky characters first came to life. Over the years, they’ve travelled the world, sparking smiles wherever they go.
I can’t wait for the people of Leeds to interact with them, feel that sense of nostalgia and humour, and join us in the Victoria Leeds and Leeds Pride celebrations.”
Visitors inspired by the installations can also discover more of the artist’s work at Castle Fine Art in Victoria Quarter, where additional pieces are on display and available to purchase.
