Sustainability
Victoria Leeds is Hammerson-owned and made up of two shopping centres, Victoria Gate and Victoria Quarter. As a business, we aim to create retail destinations that deliver net positive impacts economically, socially and environmentally, through leading-edge design, operational efficiency and a culture of respect and responsibility. By 2030 we will be a Net Positive company for carbon, resource use, water and socio-economic impacts.

Follow the Hammerson journey here, with access to key documents, our latest performance data and updates on our company initiatives.

At Victoria Leeds we are working with Hammerson to reduce our environmental impact.

Energy consumption
In 2018 we saved 5% on our energy consumption, which is equivalent to making over 1,636,652 cups of tea.

As a BREEAM excellent building, Victoria Gate adopts some of the latest innovations available, allowing us to reduce our overall energy demands. These include low energy LED bulbs; low energy lifts; natural lighting, heating and cooling systems.

Water consumption
In 2018 our water consumption was just under 2m3 per visitor. In total this amounted to around half an Olympic-sized swimming pool. We’re currently investigating the feasibility of rainwater harvesting systems to help us meet our water reduction targets for 2030.

Waste and Recycling
In 2018 we recycled 77% of our waste. The rest was used for energy generation – we send nothing to landfill. Even the food waste from our restaurants is sustainably managed onsite and in our biodigester. This technology converts food waste into grey water and allows us to generate clean energy through a process of Aerobic Digestion.

In 2019 we will focus on:

• Focusing on reducing our and our tenants’ water consumption through a range of innovative projects
• Continuing our partnership with Leeds Kirkgate Market to deliver Teenage Market events, providing a free platform for local young people to showcase their creative talents
• Collaborating with Leeds United Foundation to host further on-site Dementia Friendly Cafes, working towards making Victoria Leeds a more inclusive destination

Community & Charity
Our charity partners for 2018-2019 are Bone Cancer Research Trust and Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Both charities were selected following a vote by Victoria Leeds Management Team employees.

Bone Cancer Research Trust fund pioneering research, raising vital awareness to ensure more people can be diagnosed sooner, and provide information and support to patients.

Yorkshire Air Ambulance’s two helicopters and aircrew teams of Advanced Trauma Paramedics & Consultant Doctors provide a rapid-response emergency service to over 5 million people in Yorkshire, 365 days a year.

In addition to a cash donation, we look at ways to maximise our partnership with both charities through employee volunteering and fundraising opportunities.
