Why use vegan makeup?

Charlotte Tilbury, Hourglass, Too Faced vegan makeup

With more people choosing a vegan diet and most of us against animal testing, it’s no wonder there’s a growing trend for cruelty-free cosmetics. But how do we know if a lipstick is vegan or that our foundation has never been tested on animals?

Here are three things to consider when shopping for cruelty-free and vegan makeup:

1. Vegan is not the same as cruelty-free

Buying cruelty-free makeup means that you’re purchasing something that’s never been tested on animals at any stage. Vegan makeup brands go one step further, as they contain no animal products, by-products or derivatives. The two don’t always go hand-in-hand and are not the same thing.

2. Look out for logos

Most cruelty-free makeup brands display the Leaping Bunny logo to prove that they’re cruelty-free, and vegan brands will show the Certified Vegan logo. If you can’t spot them, check the brands’ website which should clearly state if they’re vegan or cruelty-free.

3. What’s on the ingredients list?

If you’re still unsure if a product is vegan then check out the ingredients. Here are the most common animal by-products to avoid:

Beeswax Taken directly from a beehive and commonly used in eyeshadow, foundation or lipstick.
Carmine This gives many lipsticks and nail polishes their deep red colour and is taken from crushed insects’ bodies and legs.
Guanine Created by scraping fish scales off dead fish, this gives your blusher, eyeshadow and nail polish extra shine.
Lanolin A fat created from the grease in sheep’s hair, it’s often used in lip balms and lipsticks.
