With the clocks going back soon, it’s officially time to hunker down for winter – and snooze in bed for an extra hour! To help you make the most of it, we’ve rounded up our favourite buys to cosy up your bedroom. Ready for your lie-in?
Crisp cotton bed sheets are all very well in summer, but they don’t quite cut it once the winter chill sets in. Thankfully, flannelette has shrugged off its granny-ish image and now comes in modern colours like millennial pink. Its super-soft, brushed cotton finish will keep you toasty all night long.
Other luxury bedding options include silk, organic cotton and cashmere – the natural fibres are breathable, so you’ll be warm but not uncomfortable. And look for high thread counts of 300 or above – the higher the thread count, the softer the bed linen. As with your winter wardrobe, layering is key, so add a couple of bedspreads or chunky knit throws at the bottom of your bed that you can pull up as needed.
Our picks: (left to right) 1. Evesham Bed Linen Collection, from £40, The White Company; 2. Boutique Hotel silk bedspread in Tea Rose, £180-£260, John Lewis
The golden rule of cosy bedroom fabrics? Think textured, not smooth. Treat your feet to thick-pile rugs around the bed (a sheepskin rug is just the ticket). Layer up your pillows with chunky knit large cushions, and don’t forget the little extras that will help you sleep soundly – a faux-fur hot water bottle gets the sheets warm before you jump in and a pair of cashmere bed socks never go amiss, either.
Our picks: (left to right) 1. Wilby cushion cover in silver grey, £28, The White Company; 2. Single sheepskin rug, £35, John Lewis
Did you know that interior designers often scatter several lamps around a room? It creates a wonderfully cosy glow and gives you lots of options – really important at this time of year when the lights get switched on early.
Have a mix of table lamps, ceiling pendants and tea lights in your bedroom and look out for the mixed materials trend: think soft fabrics like linen and velvet contrasted with gold, copper, wood and crystal. These will catch the light beautifully and create a warm, homely feel.
Our picks: (left to right) 1. Ceramic large bottle table lamp in white grey, £195, The White Company; 2. Montserrat ceiling light, £450, John Lewis
Never underestimate the power of home fragrance when it comes to getting your eight hours each night! Comforting scents such as lavender, vanilla and warm woods such as cedar wood are perfectly suited to winter months as they will help you drift off to sleep.
A flickering set of scented candles on your bedside table is the most atmospheric way to scent a room, but try spritzing your bedding with an aromatic pillow spray, too – look for ones with essential oils to help you wind down naturally.
Our picks: (left to right) 1. Coco & Sandalwood three wick candle, £60, Molton Brown; 2. Relaxing Pillow Mist, £18, L'Occitane
