We’ve said ta-ra to Halloween so now’s the really scary bit: there’s just over 60 days until Christmas! To help get you organised and feeling super smug during the Christmas countdown, let’s get one thing ticked off your list already: planning your table setting.
Love a traditional Christmas? Red and green are hues drawn from nature, so take this as your starting point, working berry and leaf patterns into your table setting alongside sprigs of holly and pine cones. Arrange in glass vases, or use a wreath as a centrepiece on a patterned runner.
To keep an elegant feel, work calmer colours into your scheme – a crisp white tablecloth with gold cutlery for that precious touch. Place a Christmas cracker and co-ordinating bauble on every plate to make your guests smile, and light some candles to get people in the festive spirit.

A cool Scandi-style theme adds a hint of a Winter Wonderland without being over the top. Choose white table linens and crockery, then add a sprinkle of fairy dust with plenty of metallic accessories – think glittery placemats and glowing decorations. Use candles to illuminate a statement centrepiece – a glass bowl full of super-shiny baubles creates maximum sparkle.
Oh, and ignore the rule about not mixing silver and gold, because they can look really elegant together. If you want to be really on trend, add some copper or rose-gold tones – their warmth makes any dining table feel inviting.

From smiling elves to marching drummers, cheer up your table setting with some quirky Yuletide characters. Also in the mix are jolly festive slogans, because what’s Christmas without a Ho Ho Ho? This look is all about clashing colours and good festive fun, so don’t worry about things looking over the top – that’s all part of its charm!
Embrace the Santa’s grotto feel by ditching the candles and try trailing some coloured fairy lights, kitsch ornaments and bright baubles between the serving dishes instead – the kids (and you) will love it.
Our picks: (left to right) 1. Charbonnel et Walker Christmas cracker drum pack of 6, £42.95, Harvey Nichols; 2. Nutcracker drummer wood figurine, £30, John Lewis
